Welcome to a new series, Craigslist Debunking. We will be dissecting peoples’ less than factual Craigslist listings that are chock full of bullshit. Tonight, we investigate this 1995 Acura Integra DC4 JDM Type R 98 spec CLEAN TITLE.
Hello CL, up for sale is my baby sad to see it go but time to part ways, started off as a bone stock 1995 Acura Integra LS (does not make it a ITR, the word you need is “conversion” in your goddamn CL listing heading) clean title one owner with commute miles was about 110k this was back in 2004. (WTF does this mean?) Since then many things have been done, as it stands now it’s got as listed JDM front end oem silver housing HID headlights (off car I have black Type R front lip) on car is with no lip and photographed. (wut) Real Carbon Fiber Hood, fiberglass fenders and oem Honda front bumper. Under hood is 98 spec JDM ITR full swap; engine, tranny 4.7 final drive with LSD, shift linkage, axles, ecu, and harness. Has about 20k miles with swap. On car is JDM 98 header with factory heat shield over it test pipe and skunk 2 cat back exhaust; (NOTE this car is smog legal with a 97 Gsr exhaust manifold and cat, since it’s OBD1) (I seriously doubt this is CA smog legal, especially with a ITR engine, and how do you both have a 97 GSR exhaust manifold and a JDM 98 header? And even with a test pipe?) car has been fully re painted in jdm silver metallic (there are 3 ITR colors that are silver metallic and how does JDM make a difference?) and shaved side mouldings to look Type R. Wheels are brand new under 100 miles are 4 lug JDM ITR 98 spec replica wheels (crack pipe alert) on bf Goodrich GForce tires, will also include extra set of wheels, real Volks with tires about 40%. skunk 2 coil overs with tokiko shocks and front and rear camber kits with recent Alignment when wheels were put on, interior is very clean has gsr instrument cluster, runs great no issues at all and A/C blows cold!!! Change oil by time not miles as car is mostly garaged (so would you not change oil for 5 months even as you have driven 10k miles?) , My loss is your gain as this car has had over $20,000 invested in it over time..... (that’s what all the JDM fanbois say) Serious offers only no rush to sell and looking for the right buyer who knows what they’re getting and knows well what it’s worth
$6,900

And yet, for somebody living near Cali with 15 year sundown on smog checks, this could be a bargain of sorts. Sure, it’s some guy’s try-too-hard ITR “replica” with a lot of flaws, but I bet it runs well - other than the 4.7 final drive probably making it noisy at highway speeds. The only really screaming “don’t buy somebody else’s project car” I see here would be if he’s been into the electrics - most of the rest of the bits are bolt-up to a degree, but Captain Hap Hazard here should probably not be trusted within ten miles of a crimp connector.

Sounds like yet another car where the parts were procured from Midnight Auto Parts... Run away!

I was going from memory of what a statute here used to be. It doesn’t seem there is one, but there’s a lot of info missing from the Wikipedia page. The best thing that can be probably hoped for anywhere near is a 25 year sundown. That would require in, say, Washington, that this thing somehow pass a total of *two* emissions tests before being in the clear, so not too bad.

And I love deconstructions - very nice.

At least the interior is clean, I’ll give the owner that much.

But then again, he is running “fake” JDM 5-lug wheels. So, there’s that.

You guys are way off, if his $6900 asking is negotiable it isn’t a bad prospect for someone looking for a clean 90's Honda. To clarify what the seller means about the different headers: the current headers on the car are JDM 98 ITR, but a swapping it for one off of a 97 usdm GSR will pass smog. Same thing as people who put the stock cats back in place of their mad tyte test pipes when it’s time for inspections.
98 ITR replica wheels for 4 lug are a great way to get the ITR look without shelling stupid money for ITR suspension, knuckles, hubs, rotors, etc. Not sure if you know, but the 17" jdm itr wheels only came in 5 lug. only first year (1997) itr’s are 4 lug and they came with 15" wheels. To get the more attractive 17" wheels on a 4 lug car, you need to swap some of your suspension with ITR components.
The car is probably stupid fun to drive around town with the 4.7 fd. It’s a clean, well put together Honda.

I’m out of my depth with these sorts of cars ... is that price at least the sum of what its parts are worth?

I am also out of my depth, but if one wanted this sort of car, one would almost certainly spend more to build it. The Volk wheels he mentions, if genuine as he claims, are worth well over a grand, just for one. Nearly a grand for good fake ones, if new. His Type R engine (again, assuming some accuracy) would be worth a couple grand, I think, and the coilovers and other stray parts could easily add up to the rest, not including the car.
You’d be right to bring in the axiom that the value of the car is not what you spent plus the cost of upgrades, but there are plenty of people out there who’d be trying to build nearly this exact car with those parts, so his price isn’t
crazy.

It’s close to what I experienced when I sold real estate. A $60,000 Mountain Lake pool might add $40K to the value of a house in Santa Monica, but in Portland Maine it’s not going to help you. And if the buyers have kids that can fall into it, it may hurt you.

One other thing that might play here into conditional valuation in a very similar way to real estate is that Integras are stupidly easy to steal and very much in demand for chop shops. This thing is theft bait on an absolutely legendary level
in some locales.
Not others.

And if they want it, they’ll find a way to take it. Use all the alarms and kill switches you want. They’ll bring a flatbed.

I’m pretty sure 15 year old Sundowns are nearly inexistent except if you BAR (Emissions) recertify this car, which would bring it within cost to an actual genuine ITR. California smog laws are shitty.
